Job Description

Position Overview

Safely repairs plant equipment in such a way as to ensure all equipment is always operating in a safe condition. Reinforces the safety culture throughout the entire organization. Attends plant maintenance and plant safety meetings. Repairs issues identified during plant inspections in a timely manner.

Inspects, repairs and maintains ready mix plants.  Performs skilled mechanical and electrical diagnosis, maintenance and repair work on plants and other supporting facilities.  Uses hand tools, power tools, hoists, cranes, welding equipment, measuring and testing equipment. Visually inspects and tests machinery and equipment, using electrical and electronic test equipment. Listens for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunctions and discusses machine operation variations with supervisors or other maintenance workers to diagnose problems or repair machines. Dismantles defective machines and equipment and installs new or repaired parts, following specifications using precision measuring instruments and hand tools. Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery, using rags, brushes, and grease gun. Operates cutting torch or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  1. Analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds and maintains plants.
  2. Operates and inspects machines and equipment to diagnose defects.
  3. Dismantles and reassembles equipment using hoists, hand tools and power tools.
  4. Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.
  5. Replaces defective parts, assembles and sub-assembles as needed.
  6. Tests overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency (must be able to operate all equipment).
  7. Welds broken parts and structural members using cutting torch and welding equipment.
  8. May direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment.
  9. Demonstrates skills in basic fabrication
  10. Services and greases plant parts (i.e. changing belts, greasing bearings and maintaining cleanliness of plants.
  11. Orders and maintains inventory of plants parts, grease, asphalt oil, etc.
  12. Communicates and receives direction for dispatch, drivers, operators and customers in person, via telephone and via radio.
  13. Performs recording keeping of time and parts used on appropriate forms.
  14. Perform general cleaning of work areas and maintenance areas.
  15. Assists other maintenance department staff in performing the duties necessary to assure the efficiency of operations of the plants.
  16. Must understand 480-volt systems including control power. Computer batch panel experience a plus.
  17. This position is considered "Safety Sensitive"

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

Use of machines, tools, equipment; mechanic’s hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting equipment, lubricating tools, hoists, cranes, man lift, measuring and electrical testing equipment, computers, laser alignment tools, blue prints, service truck.

Additional Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, nights and weekends as needed
  • Must be physically capable of lifting and placing large components
  • Must be capable of climbing silos, aggregate bins and conveyor buildings and perform tasks at these heights
  • Must be able to lift 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or pull up to 50 pounds frequently
  • Must be able to lift and carry from floor level to waist level and push/pull objects with similar force
  • Physical demands include but are not limited to reaching, handling, fingering and or feeling, kneeling, squatting, bending and climbing.

There is significant noise, vibration and heat which is intermittent but may cause hearing loss and bodily harm.

There is also significant dust and dirt in the environment.

There are many conditions and situations which present danger of bodily injury such as heights, moving mechanical parts, electrical shock and other hazards. This is caused by the equipment and machines.

This position is mostly outdoors and varies dramatically with weather conditions.
