Job Overview

The Department of Surgery is looking for a Biomedical Engineer, who can perform research and collaborations to exchange and utilize professional engineering expertise with scientists and medical providers with the goal of exploring and devising practices, concepts, and theories impacting health, safety, and quality of life. Manage the daily operation of research projects and ensure strict compliance with product quality assurance, equipment and procedural standards, health and safety protocols.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct bench, operational, and clinical testing and validation of medical devices to ensure safety and functionality when/if used during medical military activities.
  • Execute core operations of research projects in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards. Collaborate with researchers for experiment design, including hypothesis formation, testing and evaluation protocols, and validation of biomedical technologies.
  • Ensure effective use, maintenance, calibration, and repair of medical equipment in accordance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure methods in metrology are appropriately implemented and standards are maintained according to ASTM requirements. Provide technical assistance and instruction to staff regarding equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Create, implement, and maintain policies and procedures for the department. Evaluate efficiency of procedures and recommend methods for improvement.

  • Ensure timely project delivery, proper equipment handling, and consistency of operations.
  • Conduct market research on new devices and provide an assessment of the newest technologies for potential research studies.
  • Assist staff with departmental contracts and ensure appropriate involvement with new and current research efforts.
  • Manage communication, productivity, and quality related to assigned work communicated with team members.
  • Support Trauma research and Quality Plan in coordination with the Division Director, Quality and Regulatory Affairs.
  • In support of research teams, design data collection protocols, ensure appropriate tools and technologies are used, develop and implement comprehensive data management plans for the research lifecycle, and establish data validation and quality control to ensure data integrity.
  • Support and promote all aspects of our commitment to inclusion and core values.
  • Assist with manuscripts and technical reports for submission to peer reviewed journals.

Required Education

Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering.

Required Experience

Three (3) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training in the fields of equipment and instrumentation management of allied industries.

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Biomedical engineering in Military setting is ideal.
  • Master’s Degree ideal.
  • Working knowledge of computer software, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements as per 21 CFR 820 and ISO 9001, ISO 13485:2003, and ISO 14971:2007 and other applicable or updated guidelines is ideal.
  • Sufficient understanding of regulatory aspects in bench research and market research is ideal.
  • Strong decision-making skills.
  • Proven ability to build, sustain, and influence relationships at all levels of an organization.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to invoke change.
  • Thrive in a corporate culture that expects excellence and innovation.
  • Solution-oriented and makes sound decisions quickly, given tight timeframes.
