Job Description And Duties

Under the supervision of the Crime Analyst Supervisor in the Firearms Records Unit, the Crime Analyst II (CA II) on the Mental Health Team is responsible for tasks associated with the implementation of Assembly Bill 1968 (Stats. 2018, ch. 861). The CA II will receive and process requests to review mental health records, in order to positively identify individuals who are prohibited from owning or possessing firearms/ammunition. Once identified, the CA II will provide additional personal descriptors on mental health firearm prohibition records in order to accurately identify whether a particular individual has more than one admittance within a one-year period and, therefore, lifetime prohibited. This includes processing requests to review firearm prohibition records in the Mental Health Reporting System (MHRS), conducting queries in the MHRS to retrieve mental health firearm prohibition records, contacting the mental health facilities throughout California to request for additional personal descriptors for mental health firearm prohibition records, verifying information received, identifying if the mental health firearm prohibition record matches a previously identified record, updating the record, and scanning and batching the records for quality assurance review. The CA II will maintain a tracking log of all requests sent for additional personal descriptors and conduct follow-up contact with mental health facilities that have not responded. The CA II will assist with verifying and correcting or cancelling mental health firearm prohibition records, producing certified copies of prohibition reports, preparing monthly reporting graphs, providing technical support for the MHRS, review court orders for restoration of firearm rights and delete prohibition records, develop system specifications and database testing, testifying in court as the subject matter expert, and conduct quality assurance review of various assignments. The CA II may be required on occasion to work overtime, which may include weekends and holidays and may be required to travel in California for court testimony.
