Environmental Specialist

Position Overview

We are seeking a career-oriented environmental professional to support the Environmental Manager with the coordination and implementation of environmental permits, programs, and regulatory requirements. The Environmental Specialist will be responsible for ensuring compliance and operational success across multiple environmental programs, including wastewater reuse, public drinking water, stormwater, hazardous waste, and air quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Environmental Manager to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.

  • Review permits and regulations, identifying actionable requirements and maintaining tracking systems for compliance.

  • Monitor, analyze, and manage regulatory data; ensure timely reporting to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Communicate updates on environmental issues, concerns, and compliance matters to the Environmental Manager and facility personnel.

  • Provide guidance to staff on environmental issues and assist in resolving concerns.

  • Lead or support environmental projects as assigned.

  • Conduct investigations to determine root causes of environmental issues and develop prevention and improvement strategies.

  • Audit regulatory data, documentation, and compliance status.

  • Collaborate with wastewater and plant operations teams to support compliance.

  • Support interactions with regulatory agencies and facility leadership.

  • Engage in ongoing technical education and professional development.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Environmental Manager or Wastewater Supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Strong professional communication skills, with the ability to handle compliance inquiries and communicate effectively under pressure.

  • Ability to review technical information and translate it into actionable tasks.

  • Flexibility to serve on-call or work nights, weekends, or holidays as needed.

  • Willingness to support wastewater operations when required.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and sound decision-making abilities.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, SharePoint, SCADA, and other industrial software platforms.

  • Comfortable working in varied and challenging environments, including odorous, hot, humid, noisy, or outdoor conditions.

  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and personal cell phone required.

Experience & Education

  • Relevant education preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years of industrial environmental compliance experience required.

  • Experience with industrial or operational programs such as wastewater, drinking water, and related systems preferred.

  • Familiarity with the following regulatory areas:

    • Wastewater/reuse permits and land application

    • Stormwater permitting and SWPPP requirements

    • Public drinking water program

    • Sanitary sewer permits

    • Air permit requirements and GHG reporting

    • EPCRA reporting requirements

    • Waste management programs (RCRA)

    • Oil Pollution Act (SPCC) implementation

    • Groundwater monitoring

  • Water and wastewater licenses preferred but not required.
