Full-Time Faculty, Illustration

We are searching for an experienced Full-Time Faculty, Illustration at our Goldsmith Campus - Westchester campus. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Full-Time Faculty, Illustration role is a renewable non-tenure track, full-time, and benefits-eligible position. The position possesses a strong commitment to teaching a broad range of Illustration courses offered within our core curriculum with an emphasis on foundational illustration skill sets, technological tools, and the professional fields relevant to the discipline. We seek applicants who demonstrate comprehensive expertise in illustration, encompassing both its commercial applications and artistic dimensions. The ideal candidate will possess a nuanced understanding of how their individual professional practice intersects with and navigates these complementary domains. Full-Time Faculty members contribute to and develop new curriculum in the undergraduate Illustration program.

Expectations include teaching six courses per year, providing college and departmental service, and maintaining an active and creative professional practice that informs the growth and development of the department and the students who study within it. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to critically examine the cultural contexts that shape their work, effectively linking their professional practice to the broader disciplinary conversations and historical developments within illustration. The ideal candidate will be capable of developing innovative curriculum, guiding students to contextualize their artistic endeavors within larger cultural and professional frameworks. Candidates must showcase how their pedagogical approach incorporates inclusive teaching methodologies and demonstrates robust cross-cultural competencies and have the ability to speak to a diverse student body hailing from a wide range of backgrounds. Successful candidates must demonstrate an ability to work efficiently, cooperatively, and collaboratively in a team environment. This position reports to the Chair of Graphic Design and Illustration.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

Full-Time Faculty are responsible for teaching effectively, pursuing ongoing professional achievement, and contributing service to their home department and the College. Fulfilling this work makes up 100% of their responsibilities.  Specific responsibilities include:

Teach courses as scheduled and in alignment with the mission and learning outcomes of the Department and College: Hold a full-time studio course load and perform service as noted.

Prepare the syllabus and any supporting materials associated with teaching the course, and begin each semester fully prepared for classes.

Evaluate and improve the course content and pedagogy relevant to contemporary approaches and academic and industry standards. This includes introducing diverse approaches beyond Euro-centric practices and creating a inclusive learning environment.

Record attendance and grading in timely manner for students and the College's record keeping.

Advise students outside of class hours regarding academic issues during the defined office hours. Refer students to Student Affairs and other Campus resources, as needed.Develop pedagogy for introducing and discussing diverse topics beyond Euro-centric approaches and creating an inclusive learning environment.

Serve up to 6 hours per week in service to the department and the College, as assigned by the Department Chair. Participate and contribute to College's shared governance system through Academic Assembly, Faculty Senate, Academic Assembly subcommittees, ad-hoc committees, and/or task forces focused on specific topics.

Departmental service may include but is not limited to providing academic advising to departmental students, attending departmental meetings, organizing visiting artists & designer series for department, assisting chairs with scheduling courses and assigning physical resources, and representing department at internal and external events and occasions as assigned, and etc.

Contribute to Program assessment as scheduled.

Maintain active creative and professional practices as well as continue active professional network.

Support and mentor diverse students and their successful academic progress.

Demonstrate commitment to student success and a healthy classroom environment.

Demonstrate professionalism and cooperation with colleagues.

Adhere to the institutional policies and procedures.

Work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve departmental and college goals through sustained efforts and initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree in a field related to Illustration.

Demonstrated teaching effectiveness in the field of illustration or related field.

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills are required.

Substantial knowledge of historical and contemporary artists, illustrators, and designers.

Demonstrated ability to develop new courses after evaluating the needs of the department, in conjunction with faculty colleagues and the Chair.

Sustained record of creative and professional practice in a related field.   

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills.  

Strong ability to work creatively and effectively with a diverse student body as part of a team of professional designers, artists, and educators

Comfortable working in a multicultural environment and committed to fostering an inclusive culture.

Must be able to work efficiently, cooperatively and collaboratively in a team environment.

Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with various constituencies within Otis's diverse communities, internally and externally.         

Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to a changing work environment.

An active, distinguished professional practice or engagement in creative and critical scholarship that demonstrates exceptional creative and professional accomplishments within the Illustration discipline

Preferred Qualifications:

MFA or other terminal degree in a field related to Illustration.

Two years of teaching experience beyond graduate school.

Skills and knowledge in digital drawing tools.

Excellent organization skills and working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, Adobe Suite, and digital software including Outlook.

FLSA Status: Exempt

Compensation Type: Annual Salary

Salary Range: 75,248.00 - 83,898.00
