Job Title: Health Promotion Educator

Salary Range: $50,000 - $62,000

General purpose: The Health Promotion Educator will provide leadership for the development, implementation and assessment of health education and health promotion programs for the College in cooperation and collaboration with other College departments. This position will plan, develop and implement health promotion initiatives by use of theoretical and evidence-based practices with the primary goal of having a positive impact on the student population by way of education, communication, programming and policy, specifically addressing the health and well-being concerns of students matriculating at an art and design school.

Summary of Essential Functions:

  • Develop appropriate strategies and methods to facilitate health promotion and learning experiences that provide the MICA community the opportunity to make appropriate health decisions.

  • Develop and deliver wellness related education to the MICA community, collaborate with other offices that focus on student programming, with a specific focus on fitness and well-being for artists

  • Provide administrative oversight to MICA Fitness Center by way of providing supervision and training of paid student staff

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop health and well-being related educational programs for the MICA community, with a primary focus on the student population

  • Coordinate and deliver outreach and education projects promoting physical and mental health, nutrition, exercise and well-being program activities

  • Assess and evaluate programs, perform research on relevant topics, and revise presentation materials as appropriate

  • Manage the daily operation of the MICA Fitness Center including but not limited to coordinating staffing and instructors, responding to concerns, maintaining the facility, maintaining equipment service contracts and developing systems and processes for operation of the facility

  • Hire, train, and supervise student staff on all health-related initiatives sponsored by the Health and Well-Being Team; Supervise and train fitness assistants

  • Work closely with MICA Student Health and Student Counseling staff to coordinate and deliver robust public health and well-being programming to students.

  • Consult with Faculty, Residence Life, Student Engagement, and other campus staff to support a healthy student learning environment on campus

  • Assist with articulating the vision for Health Promotion and Education. ; investigate new and emerging trends and explore opportunities for growth; assess and improve all related programs and activities

  • Create and/or maintain fitness and health promotion related MICA web resources

  • Communicate with Facilities Management and outside contractors regarding necessary repairs and upgrades to the fitness center and equipment

  • Maintain sport and recreational equipment available for check-out and inventory supplies.

  • Manage the Fitness Center budgets.

  • Develop a schedule of instructional fitness or wellness classes and hire instructors as appropriate

  • Serve on divisional and institutional committees as necessary

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of health, fitness, nutrition, and related terminology

  • Knowledge of liability and risk management issues

  • Knowledge of college student development (theory and practice)

  • Ability to supervise professional staff and direct large number of student staff

  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills

  • Ability to work with diverse populations

  • Appreciation for the unique lifestyle of student artists and the role of art in society required

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Physical Education and/or Health Education

  • Relevant experience in a health or fitness field including experience planning and/or teaching wellness related courses or activities

  • AED/CPR/First Aid Instructor certification

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in health education, social work, counseling, higher education administration with a concentration in health promotion or similar

  • Prior experience working in higher education

  • Experience working with college students or in an educational setting

  • Required training: Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment. (additional training may be added, SEE: EHS Manager training schedule)
