Job Description and Duties

Under close supervision of the Computer Forensic Team Supervising Fraud Investigator I or designee, incumbents are assigned law enforcement responsibilities commensurate with their background and training from entry level to highly complex duties and casework. Detectives conduct criminal investigations of felony violations of State and Federal law relating to insurance fraud and white-collar crime involving the use of electronic information systems. Incumbents may work alone, with a team, or as a lead computer forensic investigator assigned to conduct computer forensic investigations of criminal enterprises and profiteering and assist in the prosecution of cases involving these groups in both State and Federal courts; and conduct investigations involving a broad range of felony violations, both State and Federal judicial systems. Incumbents perform a full range of peace officer duties and responsibilities in the accomplishment of their assignments in accordance with the California Penal Code, Section 830.3. Although this position reports into the Headquarters Office, the incumbent may be physically located at a Regional Office. Extensive travel is required within and/or outside the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.). Travel will/may include overnight stay. Overtime will/may be required.

This position is designated under the Conflict of Interest Code. The position is responsible for making or participating in the making of governmental decisions that may potentially have a material effect on personal financial interests. The appointee is required to complete Form 700 within 30 days of appointment. Failure to comply with the Conflict of Interest Code requirements may void the appointment. 

New to state candidates for the Investigator (8610) classification are entitled to the entrance salary rate (minimum) for Range A, which is currently $6,215. Candidates who meet alternate range criteria (ARC) 492, will qualify for the entrance salary rate (minimum) of range B, which is currently $7,163.

In addition to the regular salary, this classification is eligible for the following pay differentials:

• Recruitment & Retention - $200/month (For Investigators assigned to offices in the following counties: Los Angeles County, Santa Clara County, Solano County)

These positions may be filled as Limited Term/Full-Time if the candidate needs to complete the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) requirements. Upon successful completion, the incumbent will be appointed to the Investigator position Permanent/Full-Time. If the candidate has already met POST requirements through an academy, then he/she will be appointed Permanent/Full-Time upon hire.
