Job Summary:

The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools runs an Extended Day program supporting 700+ students per year during the before (Early Day) and after school (Late Day) hours. The Extended Day programs provide opportunities for children to connect with friends, discover and develop interests, and relax while their families need additional care before and after the school day. Extended Day programs are designed to provide students with constructive, intentional, and meaningful opportunities to engage socially with one another, creatively with materials and concepts, and civically in the life of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and community. Extended Day programs bring all of this to life within the familiar and enriching school environment onsite at the Laboratory Schools. 

The Campus Monitor position is designed to assist with the smooth functioning of several pieces of the daily operations at the Historic Campus - Middle School lunch/Recess, High School lunch, and Extended Day for grades 3-8. Supervising our students around the school is a critical way that we provide a safe and secure environment for the students. Lunch supervision and Extended Day will take place indoors and outdoors.

The hours for this role are between 11am and 6pm daily. In addition to lunch supervision and Late Day supervision, the staff will have scheduled time for planning and meeting with members of the Family Life Programs administration team. Defined roles are outlined below and other duties may be assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Lunch Supervision - Active supervision of students - moving around the space - and reminders about appropriate behavior, including appropriate language, are critical to your role. Engaging with students when necessary or appropriate, and working with the other faculty and staff assigned to supervise the space is essential

  • Recess Supervision - The recess supervisor will be tasked with working collaboratively to enforce safe behavior and student expectations outside and in the cafeteria

  • Late Day Supervision - Staff supervise students that need additional care/study space after the normal school day. Staff work in teams to manage daily tasks, develop and implement programming, and create an enriching, warm, and organized program

  • All successful candidates will exhibit dependability, trustworthiness and self-direction.

  • Performs other related work as needed

  • Receptive to feedback and able to make adjustments when necessary

  • Excellent communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with others

  • Strong customer service skills, as well as a friendly and professional demeanor

  • Comfort working with mobile technology 

  • Comfortable independently supervising groups of children

  • Support children through developmental growth stages 

  • Communicate effectively and professionally with families and daytime faculty

Education, Experience, or Certifications:

Education:

  • High School diploma required

Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Working with nursery-aged children in a daycare, camp, or school setting required

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Move in and around the classroom and building to interact with students, faculty, staff, parents, and other members of the community

  • Facilitate programs inside and outside, even in winter months

  • Escort children from one classroom to another, in and out of buildings during arrival and dismissal (where required), and in an emergency situation. This may include climbing stairs of up to 2 stories, where appropriate, with younger children

  • The hours for this position are Monday-Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

  • This role will switch to approximately 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. teaching position during summer months

Hourly Pay:

  • $20.00
