Overview A Dietitian in a Youth Detention Center is responsible for planning and overseeing nutrition programs that support the health and well-being of incarcerated youth. They ensure that meals meet nutritional standards, address medical and dietary needs, and promote healthy eating habits within the facility. Key Responsibilities Assess Nutritional Needs: Evaluate the dietary requirements of youth, considering age, medical conditions, cultural preferences, and behavioral health concerns. Develop and Implement Meal Plans: Create balanced, cost-effective meal plans that comply with federal and state regulations while addressing the specific needs of youth in detention. Monitor Food Service Operations: Work with kitchen staff to ensure meals are prepared and served safely, meeting nutritional and food safety standards. Educate and Counsel Youth: Provide nutrition education and one-on-one counseling to promote healthy eating habits and address concerns such as obesity, malnutrition, and eating disorders. Collaborate with Facility Staff: Work with healthcare providers, psychologists, case managers, and correctional officers to integrate nutrition into overall rehabilitation and wellness programs. Ensure Compliance: Stay up to date with local, state, and federal guidelines, including USDA Child Nutrition Programs and juvenile facility regulations. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, or a related field. Certification: Registered Dietitian (RD) or Licensed Dietitian (LD) (as required by state regulations). Experience: Preferably in institutional food service, public health, or working with at-risk youth populations. Skills Strong understanding of adolescent nutrition and behavioral health considerations. Ability to work in a structured, security-conscious environment. Excellent communication and counseling skills to engage youth and staff. Knowledge of federal and state nutrition guidelines for juvenile facilities. Work Environment Secure detention or correctional facilities for juveniles. Collaboration with medical, mental health, and food service teams. Adherence to security protocols while providing care and education.
