Duties

  • Performs analysis of firearms and latent print evidence in complex cases and prepares detailed reports summarizing examination findings for law enforcement personnel and the legal community.
  • Examination, identification, and comparison of evidence and/or investigation of various types of crimes.
  • Conduct field crime scene work to gather and analyze evidence.
  • Conducts routine examination and/or investigation without direct supervision.
  • Demonstrates effective use of case management to meet the case and/or court deadlines.
  • Performs the duties of the unit supervisor in her/his absence.
  • Provide expert forensic guidance and advice to judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys to prepare exploratory questions for witnesses.
  • Performs quality control and quality assurance checks on chemicals, standards, and quality-affecting materials used in the respective unit. Test reagents for efficacy and reliability before they are used in casework.
  • Performs technical and/or administrative reviews on reports generated by other Unit personnel. May perform technical reviews and verifications on reports in multiple disciplines / sub-disciplines.
  • Testifies as an expert witness.
  • Provides training and guidance for less experienced personnel.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree (typically in Science)
  • Experience: 1-2 years of progressive work experience in (Forensic Crime) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Forensic Analyst
-OR- Education & Experience Substitution:
  • 4-6 years of progressive work experience in (Forensic Crime) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Forensic Analyst.
Knowledge & Skills
  • In-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical laboratory techniques utilized in latent print and firearms analysis within the forensic science community, to include methods, operating procedures, chemicals, reagents, analytical techniques, and instrumentation.
  • General knowledge of research, forensic analysis, and investigative techniques that limit or expand the importance of findings.
  • Knowledge of evidence preservation and the importance of maintaining the chain of custody and integrity of evidence.
  • Knowledge of criminal law and court proceedings as they apply to forensic analysis.
  • Knowledge of accreditation regulations/recommendations, as well as state and federal regulations/laws, and understanding of the importance of compliance with these regulations in regard to work performed.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance/quality control practices.
  • Ability and knowledge to operate laboratory instrumentation and utilize chemicals, reagents, and other equipment.
  • Keen knowledge of safety regulations and procedures and handling practices of hazardous and/or biohazardous materials.
  • Understanding of division policies/procedures and goals/objectives.
  • Oral skills in regard to testifying in court and being able to communicate effectively with judges, law enforcement personnel, attorneys, and juries.
  • The ability to communicate scientific thoughts in a concise and understandable manner to audiences from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Competency with a computer and various programs and databases.
  • Competency in using a camera to take photographs for documentation.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and make appropriate decisions.
  • Ability to do tedious, repetitious tasks.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of work.
  • Ability to travel in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work crime scenes and be on call 24/7.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations, maintaining good rapport with criminal justice personnel and fellow employees, and working well with others to achieve common goals.
Preference
  • Preference may be given to candidates with degrees in forensic or physical sciences, plus 2 or more years of progressive work experience in a forensic laboratory.
  • Preference may be given to candidates who have previously demonstrated competency in pattern science examinations, particularly in forensic firearms analysis.
Working Conditions
  • Subject to being on-call 24/7 for response to field crime scenes.
  • Ability to travel statewide in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • Ability to be on-call for crime scene/clandestine laboratory assistance.
  • Ability to work crime scenes, which could involve climbing, crawling, squatting, and lying.
