Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Sports Coordinator is responsible for organizing and implementing high-quality YMCA youth sports programs, including soccer, basketball, flag football, volleyball, and other activities. This role requires strong leadership, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills to manage relationships with parents, volunteers, and the community effectively.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Organize, deliver, and administer sports leagues, tournaments, recreation programs, activities, and awards.

2. Plan, organize, schedule, and direct all games, practices, officials, and scorekeepers for YMCA youth sports.

3. Provides for upkeep of assigned program facilities and equipment and ensures the physical environment supports healthy living, including lining soccer fields.

4. Visits and works at sports sites as needed.

5. Officiates and referees, when needed, should volunteers or staff not be able to cover.

6. Ensure a high level of customer service for all program participants.

7. Actively research new sports programs and activities targeted toward youth and adults.

8. During summer months, provide leadership to summer sports camps, collaborations, and other program needs as assigned.

9. Support the overall success of the YMCA and other program areas related to sports and physical education requirements as needed. 

10. Provide excellent leadership to the parents, volunteers, and staff to create a unique and positive experience for the Y’s sports programs.

11. Serve as a member of the program committee when able.

12. Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness and quality of the youth sports programs and implements improvements as needed with support from supervisory staff. 

13. Ensure all program areas/spaces are prepped and ready to go prior to sports season, which is to be followed with practices, and that all safety measures related to all equipment are followed. 

14. Ensure all off-site locations are safe and ready to host games and practices for all youth sports. 

15. Must hold a food handler and manager license within the first 90 days of hiring.

16. Recruit, retain, and train volunteer parent coaches, referees, and program support roles as needed for each season. 

17. Performs other duties as assigned related to youth programs, sports events, and fundraising efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Minimum of an Associate's Degree or greater.

2. A background in athletics and youth sports programming is preferred.

3. Experience using databases, email communications, and computer skills with Word and Excel is required.

4. Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.

5. Experience managing parental expectations and handling difficult situations in a community sports setting.

6. Ability to remain calm under pressure and de-escalate conflicts effectively.

7. Flexibility in scheduling, with emphasis on nights and weekends during each sports season.

8. Strong organizational skills and self-motivation.

9. Experience in supervising part-time staff and volunteers is preferred.

10. Referee experience preferred.

11. Certifications required within 90 days of hire: CPR, First Aid, AED, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Mandated Reporter.

12. Ability to work with diverse groups of people from all social and economic backgrounds.

13. Supervision is preferred with both part-time staff and volunteers as related to sports and recreation programs.
