SUMMARY:

Working under the direction of the Day Camp Supervisor, the Day Camp Counselor is responsible for the safety and well-being of camp participants. Counselor’s main priority is to provide campers with a fun, happy, and nurturing experience in a safe and friendly environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Supervises all assigned program participants to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
  • Organizes, implements, and actively participates in daily camp activities.
  • Assists with preparing the camp environment and cleaning up the camp environment.
  • Follows all policies and procedures of the Department and camp program.
  • Responsible for the supervision of campers while at the pool. Counselors are required to be in the pool with campers.
  • Ensures meaningful interactions with campers.
  • Promptly responds to inquiries from campers, parents, and other staff members.
  • Encourages problem solving skills in campers, while still monitoring interactions between campers and intervening when appropriate.
  • Facilitates and encourages relationships between campers.
  • Assists in creating and maintaining an enjoyable and supportive environment.
  • Manages attendance records for assigned campers in an orderly fashion.
  • Implements behavior management procedures in a proactive and positive manner.
  • Serves as an inclusive and encouraging role model for participants and fellow staff.
  • Must be able to work with children of all abilities and coordinate with MNASR staff.
  • Assists with maintaining inventory of all supplies.
  • Recommends improvements to the Day Camp Supervisor
  • Complies with all Village Policies, Protocols, and Procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The wage range for the position is $15 - $16. This position is seasonal and does not qualify for benefits.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

One year of related experience is preferred, but not required. CPR, AED, First Aid, ad Epi-Pen and Glucago Certifications required prior to the start of camp.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Proficient with email communication.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to compose and prepare reports and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money, weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITIES:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work with children
  • Ability to prioritize duties and complete tasks within allotted planning hours
  • Understanding of the principles, practices, and objectives of Parks and Recreation administration and recreation programming
  • Capacity to troubleshoot, problem solve, and use good judgment

  • Commitment to promoting the positive image and growth of the Day Camp program

Frequent exposure to natural and seasonal weather conditions as well as insects while supervising employees and completing job duties.

  • Submit recommendations for safety and efficiency, as well as report defective equipment and unsafe conditions
  • Know their exact duties in case of fire or catastrophe
  • Use safety equipment provided for personal use in performing daily work assignments
  • Only operate equipment trained and authorized to operate
  • Provide public protection from unsafe conditions and hazards resulting from municipal work operations
  • Participate in special safety activities, as designated, such as Safety Committees, Job Safety Analysis, special training, etc
