Location: Research Education Campus (REC), Idaho National Laboratory, Idaho Falls, ID

Schedule: 9x80's with every other Friday off

Program Duration: 12 months, with a potential 1-year extension.

Position Overview: Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a recent bachelors' graduate or master's graduate for our Talent Bridge program, designed to transition individuals from academic study to career readiness. The ideal candidate will be results oriented and be able to simplify complex problems to obtain realistic solutions. Reporting to the project investigator, this role focuses on waste management of tank waste and spent nuclear fuel.
  • Conduct advanced modeling and analysis of chemical reactions occurring in the presence of fluid flow and heat transfer.
  • Focus on waste management solutions for spent nuclear fuel dry storage.
  • Collaborate with the project investigator and cross-functional teams.
  • Develop and optimize chemical reaction models using machine learning.
  • Prepare detailed reports and documentation of research findings.


Responsibilities

You will develop computational models integrating interdisciplinary skills in fluid flow, heat transfer, chemistry, combustion, materials science, nuclear science, and engineering.
  • Have a deep understanding of and experience in modeling complex physical processes.
  • Successful candidates will be highly motivated individuals who collaborate with teams of experts to advance our understanding of physicochemical processes occurring in physical systems and translate that understanding into actionable ideas and solutions.

Eligibility:
  • Individuals who have graduated from a college or university with a bachelor's or master's degree within the last 12 months.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or related field
  • Fluency in the English language and excellent oral and written communication skills
  • This position requires the eventual ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship
  • On-site position in Idaho Falls, Idaho


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Computational chemistry or thermodynamics (Cantera, CHEMKIN, FactSage, ThermoCalc)
  • Thermomechanical analysis using finite element modeling (preferably with Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment software)
  • Visualization of scientific data (ParaView or similar)
  • Machine learning/artificial intelligence algorithms
  • High performance computing, scripting and batch processing
  • LINUX, Python programming
  • An established record of achievement through reports, publications, intellectual property, or presentations

Review and Evaluation: Performance and satisfaction will be reviewed at three, six, and nine months. At the six-month review, potential next steps will be discussed:

Job Information:

  • The pay range for this position is: Bachelors Level - ($82,152-$88,992) / Masters Level ($98,040-$106,188). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.


Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
