Job Description

The Theatre Teacher & Director plays an integral role in Solebury School's theatre program, which stretches across the academic and extracurricular life of the school. From introducing students to theatre to offering advanced technique opportunities for those pursuing theatrical work in college and beyond, the Theatre Teacher & Director develops classes in Solebury’s celebrated Performing Arts program and oversees a vibrant after-school activity program. All full-time positions carry with them a number of responsibilities and collateral activities. The list below is merely exemplary. On-campus housing is possible based on availability. Start date August 20, 2025.

Essential Functions:

  • Teach two to three (2-3) theatre classes per trimester as determined by the Director of Studies. 
    • Coordinate at least one theatre field trip per year
  • Through the after-school activity program, stage three (3) theatre productions throughout the school year.
    • In conjunction with the Department Head, select season productions
    • Oversee production calendar, including rehearsals and scheduling of additional staffing as needed.
    • Assist on the technical elements of production, such as costuming, props, makeup, and hair.
    • Mentor student designers and directors
    • Assist in creating promotional materials for the theatre program
  • Serve as an advisor of up to 8 students
  • Meet all school calendar obligations, including being available for students during conference periods and attending all school assemblies, faculty meetings, and in-service days
  • Participate in the residential life program, with an assigned number of weekends and weeknight responsibilities based on housing
  • Engage in continuing professional development and foster a strong working relationship with students, colleagues, and families
  • Follow the rules and regulations as set forth in the Employee and Faculty Handbooks
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Head of School

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theatre or related field
  • At least two years of directing experience
  • Knowledge of various acting techniques and instructors
  • Demonstrated experience teaching high school students

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in Theatre or related field
  • Costume, hair, and makeup design experience
  • Dance and choreography experience
  • Experience managing social media
  • Boarding and/or independent school experience

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Physical: The ability to engage in physical work, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials weighing 20 to 50 pounds; may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Sedentary work involves sitting, standing and walking around the classroom
  • Communication: Activities include both hearing and talking to express or exchange ideas and information
  • Environmental conditions: Activities occur mostly inside and occasionally outside
