Job Description

Position Summary and Overview

The Churchill School & Center, a K-12 school for students with language-based learning disabilities, is seeking a Lower School (Grades K-6)  maternity leave Literacy Specialist for hire from August 2025 - Winter 2026.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate commitment to Churchill’s mission and core values
  • Embrace and model Churchill’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion 
  • Support students by providing expert service through small group instruction; specifically in the areas of decoding and encoding using the Orton-Gillingham approach to instruction
  • Assess student progress and participation
  • Communicate often with parents/families
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings
  • Seek improved methods of best practice with regard to literacy instruction for students with language-based learning disabilities through professional development opportunities 
  • Work collaboratively with the lower school team including teachers, related service providers and specialists to plan and implement research-based, appropriate assessments, curriculum, units of study, projects and activities
  • In partnership, with other Lower School Literacy Specialists, support teachers by providing development related to all areas of literacy instruction
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have...

  • BA or BS Degree (Degree in Childhood Education, Special Education or related field preferred)
  • MA or MS Degree (Degree in Literacy/Reading or Special Education or related field preferred)
  • Classroom or small group instruction experience building positive and appropriate relationships with young students
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to continue higher levels of education to obtain knowledge of effective service strategies and methodologies, specifically the Orton-Gillingham approach, for working with children with language-based learning disabilities
  • Familiarity with Smartboards, Google Drive, and technology
  • Interest in professional career development in the field of special education and literacy instruction
  • Patience, flexibility, good organization skills, and a sense of humor

Compensation

  • $73K-$85K annual salary commensurate with experience
  • Employee Benefits Package: Health insurance, statutory disability, commuter benefits, daily complimentary lunch, professional development opportunities, accrued PTO days (1 hour every 30 hours worked), paid school holidays.
