The USC Kaufman School of Dance is seeking an experienced, full-time Senior Theatre Technician to support our in-house production team. Primarily, this role will be primarily responsible for the technical operations of the Kaufman Dance Center, including the Large Performance Studio, general dance studios, and provide other facility support. The duties will include supporting lighting, sound, AV Equipment, projectors and coordinating necessary maintenance throughout the facility for live performances or events. Occasional support for performances in non-Kaufman venues may also be necessary.
Reporting to the Dance Production Manager, an individual in this role will demonstrate a history of success in troubleshooting issues during live performances, bring a calm level-headedness to their work and be enthusiastic about supporting the artistic visions of our community. The Senior Theatre Technician works with a great deal of independence and exercises independent judgment in performing a wide variety of duties and must work well under pressure and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the Large Performance Studio, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, the use and maintenance of stage and laboratory facilities, and provide other facility support.
• Determines the technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, for events and performances presented at the facility before production dates.
• Designs, sets up, maintains, and operates lighting and sound systems for theatre, dance, music, and other productions and projects; assists guest designers and arts with technical matters.
• Assists in recruiting, training and assignment of paid technical staff for individual shows.
• Advises the Dance Production Manager, lighting and sound designers, on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show and supervises the implementation of approved technical designs.
• Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and technical equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
• Assists with the preparation and control of production budgets; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies.
• Attends production and technical rehearsals to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the mounting shows.
• Assists with the compilation and distribution of student performance reels, as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Working knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of theatre, dance, and music productions and presentations including stage, set, sound and lighting design and implementation; stage management; computerized lighting systems; stage carpentry; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
• Ability to analyze and evaluate the need for technical support for various events and performances; plan, develop, schedule and provide the technical supports required for each event or performance; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; design lighting and sound systems appropriate to each performance or oversee stage crews and volunteers; perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment; maintain inventory of necessary supplies; assist in budget preparation; establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of various groups, vendors, co-workers, and others; maintain irregular and extended working hours; able to lift, push or pull objects up to 100 pounds using appropriate tools.
• Knowledge of entertainment networking systems including Dante
• Additional software fluency: Vectorworks, QLab 5, ETC EOS
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
• This position will work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends depending upon the production schedule. Regular operating hours during the production season are Monday through Friday 10:00AM-6:00PM for some days, 2:00PM-10:00PM for others. Weekend work will vary depending on production needs.
• Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree or Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education
• Minimum Experience: 2 years Minimum Field of Expertise: Specialized, progressively responsible experience and training in applicable performing or visual arts.
The hourly rate range for this position is $26.00 - $30.00.
